Vintage Apron Value

The Usage of The Vintage Apron

Aprons were a staple clothing item for the happy homemaker for quite a few centuries. Women did not have the luxury of owning a large wardrobe, so protecting the one they had was a necessity. The apron was the last item of clothing to be put on prior to greeting the day. It was the protector of clothing, the towel to dry a tear and when the pot holder wasn't handy, a means to take out the hot steamy loaves of bread from the oven.

What Fabrics Were Used In Vintage Aprons

The very old apron was not always made from store bought fabrics. Many of them were made from the free fabric that was recycled from feed or flour sacks. The many colorful designs made wonderful aprons, towels and table cloths, when sewn together.

Additional Vintage Apron Information

Laundry day was a big chore. The washing machine had to be filled by hand with buckets of water and it was rarely hot water. It was filled once and used for all the laundry. Whites, colors and blacks! No duel rinse and no spin cycle. The less clothing that needed laundering the longer the clothes lasted. Once modern machines came into play, it became easier for the homemaker to keep up with the laundry and aprons were now being worn more for decorative purposes. They now became more frilly, lacy, ruffled or embroidered. Some had scallops while others had fancy bibs with big ruffled shoulder straps. The apron was evolving into a kitchen necessity instead of a final piece of clothing attire.

The Vintage Apron Home Business

There is just something special about the vintage aprons. They never go out of demand, and homeworkers who have the ability to sew can capitalize on this knowledge for extra income. All it takes is a sewing machine and a few vintage apron patterns. Pick out some fabrics that resemble olden days and make a few to display. You take custom orders or whip up a whole booth worth of them to market online, or at a craft fair. As customers come, offer up your business card for additional orders.

Trade Beads

by Old Folk
trade beads
Trade beads such as the Morphia or Morfia, the Chevron, Venetian and Roman or Islamic beads are of great value to collectors. The more you know about your beads the more value they hold when you proceed to sell them.

Trade beads area exactly what they indicate. They were used as money is today. In Africa they were often used to trade for spices and gold. Along the Lewis and Clark trail, they were used to trade with the Indians.

Legend lends a huge value to the Morfia, sometimes spelled Morphia beads. These are the earliest of the Islamic Rod Beads. The legend is that if you break a morfia into several pieces it has the power to bring great wealth. The more pieces it is broken into the more wealth it can bring. The broken pieces are often shared with family members to bring them wealth too.

If the price of a morfia bead goes sky-high, it does not matter. Rich Mauritians will pay any price to obtain them.

Venetian and Chevron glass, trade beads of antique nature are quite valuable. You may also find it fun to collect Indian trade beads, or Dutch delft trade beads. Dutch delft is made of a softer glass and breaks easily, so to find them in excellent condition is not an easy task. Watchful collectors often will find them at auction.

As you will see from the examples below, the value of trade beads can be very high. These are only a few examples. You will find many others available at cost of .99 cents on up to the rare, collector pieces.

Antique Russian Porcelain

by Old Folk
russian porcelain
Russian porcelain has been surfacing and being purchased for some pretty high numbers. As was shown on our home page of the website, it is going for big bucks if you happen to have any in good condition.

Dulyovo Porcelain works is renowned for antique Russian porcelain, but any of the Lomonosov, Gardner, Dezava, Popov Porcelain is also going to hold great value. Absolutely an Russian Imperial piece of porcelain is worth its weight in gold. You have to be pretty watchful for the pieces to surface, but when they do they are stunning and highly collectible. They make excellent gifts for extra special occasions.

People often times do not know what they have or what they have found at a yard sale or thrift shop. Always be on the watch for old porcelain. The 1930's and earlier will be worth more money when investing for future profits. Auction sellers are often times what we call, 'garage sale sellers'. They buy up all this stuff and hope to resell it to anybody willing to pay a dollar or two for it at auction. I personally have found some wonderful Wedgwood pieces that were listed wrong and the spelling was also wrong. Porcelain...porcelen....porcilan. You would be amazed at what you may find. Below is a sampling of Russian Porcelain.

Vintage Pillsbury Doughboy

by Old Folk

This little Pillsbury doughboy is a very popular collector item and has been since he first appeared. I recall my first doughboy being a freebie for buying Pillsbury products, and that was in the late 60's. Since that time he has become quite the popular fella, stealing the hearts of young and old alike.

When he came on the scene in 1965, he happily he happily greeted us with, "Hi, I'm Poppin Fresh", and then we heard the familiar song,

“Nothin’ says lovin’ like bakin’ in the oven, and Pillsbury says it best.”
To this day, our little doughboy holds a special place in our hearts. He is the most famous advertising icon to date, and imagine he will continue to hold those rankings for a long time.

Collectors will be thrilled to know that our poppin fresh little doughboy is extremely collectible and well worth the investment to gather together as diverse a collection as possible. To help do that we think our eBay source will be of great help. There are tons of old pieces you may already have, but then again....maybe not!

Collectible Mechanical Toys

by Old Folk
toys 003
Antique mechanical toys are a fascination for young and old alike. Wind them up or drop a penny in them and they move, walk, or play music. Some of the most favored are the cast iron mechanical toys. The old tin and hand painted are quite valuable and becoming more rare to find in working condition.

The tinplate wind up toys with their over-sized features and thin pieces of tin for arms that move, once wound up sell very high. A common seller was the figural mechanical toys with bigger heads and arms that always seemed to small for the body. The mechanical toy figures from the thirties, in relatively good condition will market for around $1500 each. They normally get a lot more expensive when from the older eras, and if in good condition. Those in fair condition still market quite well if they are antique.  Look what Ebay has available right now, and compare prices of each before buying or selling yours.  On Ebay:

Mechanical Banks

by Old Folk
Rope-skipping-mechanical-bank

The mechanical bank has intrigued just about everyone who comes upon one. Whether old or new, a mechanical bank fascinates us. The movements to collect our coins were once used as entertainment, and then to encourage young children to deposit and save their coins for a rainy day.

The Value of The c1800 Mechanical Banks

As with any old collectible or antique item, mechanical banks also have a high ticket value. Should you come across one in your grandmas attic, be sure not to toss is out as junk. A prime example of their value is a recent bank being offered on eBay know as the 'Girl Jumping Rope'. She is worth over $26000. An old puppet mechanical bank know as the 'Punch and Judy Bank', which first appeared in the late 1800's and not in mint condition will go for as high as $3000.

Advertising Banks

As far back as I can remember companies have tried to be an innovative in their advertising campaigns as possible. One such company selling Calumet Baking Powder devised a campaign to sell banks that were in the shape of their baking powder can. When the coin was deposited, there was a doll popped up to say, Thank you!
Advertising collectibles are popular, and if it was a useful item it only made them more desirable. The advertising banks are a good item to collect for future investment income. As they age they become more valuable. The Baking Powder can's opening bid was $37.

Which Mechanical Banks Should You Collect

That is a personal preference. Some prefer to collect circus type banks, while others like strictly figure, or bust banks. The cast iron type of mechanical banks are some of the most fondly sought after mechanical banks. They look old even when they are fairly new due to the casting process. You simply do not need to collect any one line of mechanical banks. A variety displayed about a room makes for a wonderful conversation when guests come to visit.

Collectible Molds

by Old Folk
140CALWZ9X2
Molds are one of the collectibles that is popular world wide. You will find all types of molds, which have made their way from far off countries, in a mold collectors display cases.

Many of us remember using the cast iron molds for making our Christmas gingerbread house. My own grandmother had a similar mold which she used in her wood cook stove. You simply took the parts out of the mold and put them together with a stiff frosting. The gingerbread molds can still be found today from eras gone by. There are not as many old cast iron molds in circulation today, but they can still be found for the holidays and also other molds for cooking and baking. Vintage cast iron molds hold a good value and would be a smart investment for future profitable sales. John Wright Molds are a favorite to collect.

The Brown Bag Molds do not date back so far in age, but they are very collectible. These particular molds have been used for many different purposes. They are sought after by both candle and soap makers. My sister-in-law poured colored, scented wax into her molds and added a raffia hanger. They made very stunning wall decorations. The Brown Bag collection encompasses a vast array of designs for the holidays, and as decorative accents placed on cookies. Some individuals used them simply for decorations on their Christmas trees or hung them from a pegged shelf. You can start your own Brown Bag Molds collection quite easily with over 400 to choose from on Ebay.

Wooden Molds such as the butter mold shown are highly collectible. These types of antique or vintage molds have often been handed down from generation to generation. Although most countries have their country specific collections, the German wooden molds are most common to my family. Second were the Swedish or Norwegian molds. German wooden molds seem to surface every now and then and can also be found from time to time on Ebay. There are hundreds of wooden molds available and range from cooking to shoe making.

The wooden cookie molds were very detailed, artistic molds such as the one shown of the windmill. The wooden cookie molds come as carvings in flat boards, stamps and rolling pins, which make a continuous rolled design. You need only cut them apart and bake them.

Springerle molds are commonly used as a traditional holiday cookie. Most of the recipes I found were an anise based recipe, which families included little secret ingredients to make the recipe their own.

All the wooden cookie molds are quite collectible and usable today.

Collectible Buttons

by Old Folk
It is hard to believe my grandmothers old dress buttons could be worth such a huge amount, but matching them up to those which have sold on Ebay, I discovered they were worth a little over $100 each! Seven matching buttons would almost double the amount if I chose to sell them. What are they? Nothing all that special really, but to a collector, they are apparently worth a mint! They are glass and steel and only a small example of the buttons that I have yet to sort from the family's handed down button can. Now that's what you call saving for the future!

Why Buttons Are Worth A Lot of Money

It is well worth repeating that sentence over and over again. If you don't think so, take a look at the buttons on Ebay. If you are a clever collector, you will be able to find buttons on eBay that sellers do not know are of value. They buy up jars of buttons or slap grandmas jar of buttons on without ever looking to see if there are any of value simply because they just haven't thought of buttons having any value. They are garage sale eBayers who do not take the time to learn about what they are selling. Your Gain!

The buttons chosen were not picked to show you high sales. These are buttons listed one after the other and sold minute after minute. To help you get started in collecting buttons, I've added threee listings from Ebay to show collectible buttons.  You will find many more by visiting the listings.

Cast Iron Toy Value

by Old Folk

The year was 1825 in the Americas, and the first Cast Iron Toys were put on the market for youngsters to play with. The casts were limited and consisted mainly of small irons on trivets, some miniature gardening tools and only a very limited amount of items on wheels.

The 1870's saw a few more items such as cap guns, banks and even some doll furniture. By 1880 the demand was growing for these durable toys and we started to see bigger toys with moving parts and much more detail was visible in each toy.  Horses on wheels were one of the earlier toys.

Toys on Wheels were crudely made, but a toy a young child could run across a wooden floor or other hard surface and be delighted as the wheels turned to make the toy follow along with them.

The period between 1915-1930 centered in on horse drawn iron toys. When you find a cast iron toy that you recognize as old, it has most likely come from this period in time, and hold good value.

Most cast iron toys are collectible whether old or not due to the fact they normally do not take long to be collectible. Below are many fun cast iron toys for the collector to view. Many more are available and new ones become available on a daily basis.

Cast Iron Tea Kettles

by Old Folk
cast iron tea kettle

The old cast iron tea kettle was a common sight sitting on the wood-stove.  It held the heat better than the modern aluminum ones, so it was easy to take boiling water from the house all the way to the barn or wherever else the hot water was needed.

Do you have a time period home that requires authentic accessories?  Homes with a fireplace or wood burning stove will also want to add a time period cast iron tea kettle to complete the look.

Why cast iron?  The cast iron heats up and gently releases the moisture into the room, but also releases a warm heat.  Besides the advantages of the tea kettle, it just plain adds to the ambiance of the room.

There are more and more surfacing every day as homeowners sell out and move on to apartments.  If you do not want an old one, there are also replica cast iron tea kettles available.  Look through the ones we have below and you should be able to find one that matches your need in a kettle and price range.
