What makes our old things valuable?
Antiques are often used in a home to add a touch of nostalgia, but they are also marks of our history. An antique may be a hand forged tool or a lantern for the front end of a train, or even an old floorboard that has carving on it. They are not just to enjoy, they are also an investment for future profits. The number of individuals who have hoarded old things in the back of their cabinets and closets are shocked to discover they are worth a lot of money years later.
Taking those old things to a local antique dealer may net you a bit of profit, but if you place them in front of a larger audience, you might be surprised at how much they are really worth. Getting a handle on what you have in your possession first is always a good idea. Once you have a ball park idea of how old the item is, or if it even has value, then seek out which avenue will be best to market your item. Some use auction websites and others contact consignment antique dealers. You do have other options as well. Large auction houses are located in major cities everywhere. Those that gather to the auctions do so because the auctions are for specific types of wares. If you have glass, then you most likely will find your items being auctioned during a period glass auction, etc.. I would recommend first knowing if you have anything of value before attempting to market your treasures.
