Antique Door Hinges
Antique hinges are surfacing more and more as designers request them for homes and the home furnishings. If you have some, now would be a great time to pull them out of your storage and put them up for sale.
Not to long ago there was a set of old hinges that came up for auction on Ebay that dated back to around 1680. Those two hinges were going for somewhere around $500. This is most likely an exception to the rule of what antique hinges are really worth, but if the buyer wants them, they will pay to get them.
Hardware for the reproduction home furnishings are not always period exact, so the builder has to turn to outside resources to find what they need. The one mentioned above was most likely hand forged by a local smithy. Many of the older ones were actually quite ornate whether for a trunk or a door. Even the smithy was quite artistic, but then he had to be as he was the only one who really could make hinges.
If you goal is to purchase antique hinges for a project you might want to jot down a few things before searching for them. You probably already have a size in mind, but go one size smaller and one size larger to see if either of those will also work. Many times, due to hand forging the hinges, the sizes can be quite varied, and perhaps another collector passed by a size you could use, for failure to take into consideration a size difference would have found what he wanted.
Replica hinges are made and available all the time, but if you are wanting to put real value in your work, be sure and at least look to see if the antique hinges wouldn't fit into your budget. The ability to put age into a reproduction piece through knobs, pulls, hinges etc., does add value for the customer. Each piece should also have a written card with any information pertaining to the reproduction piece. The era, type of material, what the piece would have been used for and anything else you might know about your reproduction. Reproduction furniture looks far more authentic with antique hinges.
